W21 X Agora Digital Art

Agora Digital Art is a social enterprise empowering the digital artists’ community by promoting and sharing great artworks made by women in the New Media Art. From February 2021, we will explore together Digital Art and Technology from a feminist perspective. Free tickets available here below.

Does AI need a body? 🧠🤖

On February 24th, at 6:30 pm GMT, don’t miss our first conversation with artist Gretchen Andrew and Helene von Schwichow, co-founder of independent think tank MOTIF Institute for Digital Culture - in partnership with @agoradigitalart. Together we will explore the role of AI in feminist practice and pose the question, ‘Does AI need a body?’

@gretchenandrew (born in Los Angeles, 1988) is a search engine and internet imperialist artist. She trained in London with the artist Billy Childish from 2012-2017. In 2018 the @vamuseum released her book Search Engine Art. Starting in 2019 she became known for her vision boards and associated performative internet manipulations of art world institutions of #friezelosangeles, #whitneybiennial, #turnerprize, and The Cover of @artforum. Gretchen’s work has recently been featured in @flashartmagazine, @washingtonpost, #fortunemagazine, @monopolmagazine, #wirtschaftswoche, @latimes, and @financialtimes. She is represented by @annkakultys, who will be hosting her next exhibition in spring 2021.

#helenevonschwichow is co-founder of the independent think tank @motif_institute. With MOTIF, she works at the intersection of technology and society, conducts research and advises organisations on topics like #AI, mobility or innovation. Her work often includes feminist perspectives on technological developments, the project #feministfutures, for example, aims to re-imagine the internet from a feminist point of view. For her work with MOTIF she has been listed in the tech category of @forbesunder30.

As part of our W21 X @agoradigitalart series talk on disembodiment, we are very exited to welcome artist Lito Kattou @litokattou and Kay Watson @kayhannahwatson, Interim Head of Art Technologies at @serpentineuk on Tuesday at 6:30 pm BST!

Together we will be exploring the concept of posthuman condition in the digital sphere.

Kay Watson is a researcher, producer and curator working with art and advanced technologies, photography and video games. She is currently Interim Head of Arts Technologies at Serpentine and a PhD researcher at Birkbeck, University of London. Recent projects include Artist Worlds (2021), Sophia Al-Maria, Tosh Basco and Kelsey Lu, Tarax’sup? (2020) Jakob Kudsk Steensen, The Deep Listener (2019) and Catharsis (2020); Hito Steyerl, Actual Reality OS (2019); Suzanne Treister, From SURVIVOR (F) to The Escapist BHST (Black Hole Spacetime) (2019); Jenna Sutela, I Magma (2019); Ian Cheng, BOB and Emissaries (2018) and The Serpentine Podcast (2018-21).

Lito Kattou, born in Nicosia, Cyprus 1990, lives and works in Athens. She is a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts and the Royal College of Art in London with an MA in Sculpture. Kattou is the recipient of the New Positions Award for Art Cologne 2018 and she was the invited artist for the 89plus Google Residency curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets at the Google Cultural Institute in Paris, 2017. She has presented her work in solo shows at Polansky Gallery, Prague; Artothek, Cologne; Benaki Museum, Athens; ROOM E1027, Berlin; Point Centre for Contemporary Art, Nicosia; Eleni Koroneou Gallery, Athens; Clearview.ltd, London; Pierre Poumet, Bordeaux; Radical Reading, Athens and in various group shows at art spaces, galleries and museums including Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin; Changing Room, London; Foothold, Bari; Komplot, Brussels; Midway Contemporary, Minneapolis; Benaki Museum and Deste Foundation, Athens

Together with Margot Mottaz, Associate Curator at @superblue.art, independent curator Wilhelmina Madeley and Zaiba Jabbar, Digital Curator at @hervisions_ , we will pose the question: "How can the body perform and be represented in these constantly changing, yet interdependent spaces?"

About the speakers:

@zaibajabbar is an award-winning director, independent curator and founder of HERVISIONS. With over a decade of experience in the film and media sectors, her curatorial practice is an investigation into how people in the margins are using technology to create art outside of traditional contexts and making space for themselves in the digital environment. HERVISIONS is a femme-focussed curatorial agency supporting and promoting artists working across new and emergent technologies and platforms with a strong focus on the intersection of art, technology and culture. Previous exhibitions and partners include, @luxmovingimage @tate @bitforms and @googleartsculture

Wilhemina has worked in the visual arts for over a decade, with some of the industry's most notable names including Damien Hirst, Frieze and Michael Werner Gallery. She has recently left her position at @acuteart, an art and technology company specialising in VR and AR, as Head of Exhibitions, to join the team at @themodernhouse. She is also a guest lecturer at @royalcollegeofart and a mentor at @ilikenetworking

@margotmottaz is the Associate Curator at @superblue.art , based in the London. Margot works closely with artists on special projects and represents their interests across departments, ensuring their vision is fulfilled in all exhibitions and displays. She also leads significant institutional and corporate partnerships with a focus on new artwork commissions.
